Messier 85 (juga dikenal sebagai M85 atau NGC 4382 atau PGC 40515 atau ISD 0135852) adalah galaksi lenticular, atau ada juga yang menyebutnya sebagai galaksi elips,[3] yang terletak di konstelasi Coma Berenices. M85 berjarak 60 juta tahun cahaya, dan diperkirakan berukuran selebar 125.000 tahun cahaya.

M85 ini ditemukan oleh Pierre Méchain pada tahun 1781. Terletak di sisi luar bagian utara gugus Virgo yang ditemukan pada tahun 2004[butuh rujukan].

Properti

M85 memiliki kadar hidrogen netral yang sangat sedikit[4] dan memiliki struktur luar yang sangat kompleks dengan cangkang dan riak-riak yang diduga disebabkan oleh bersatunya M85 dengan galaksi lain yang terjadi antara 4 dan 7 miliar tahun yang lalu, juga dikarenakan M85 berumur relatif masih muda (<3 miliar tahun) populasi bintang pada wilayah pusat, sebagian di area cincin, yang mungkin terbentuk pada akhir starburst.[5]
