Sejarah sosial, sering disebut dengan sejarah sosial baru adalah bidang sejarah yang mengkaji pengalaman hidup pada masa lalu. Pada "masa keemasan" sejarah sosial, bidang ini merupakan bidang utama pada 1960-an dan 1970-an di antara para sarjana, dan masih banyak dikaji di departemen sejarah di Britania, Kanada, Prancis, Jerman, dan Amerika Serikat. Pada dua dekade dari 1975 sampai 1995, proporsi profesor sejarah di universitas Amerika yang memiliki spesialisasi di bidang sejarah sosial naik dari 31% menjadi 41%, sedangkan proporsi sejarawan politik turun dari 40% ke 30%.[1] Di departemen sejarah universitas di Britania dan Irlandia pada 2014, dari 3410 laporan staf fakultas, 878 (26%) mengidentifikasi dirinya dengan sejarah sosial, sedangkan sejarah politik sebanyak 841 (25%).[2]
